The spring is in full swing, and with the spring, has come a whole lot of rain. All of that rain is great for our lawns and our gardens, but if your roof isn’t in perfect condition, you may find yourself dreading it. Even the best roofs will eventually start to wear out, and leaks are a common thing for homeowners to have to deal with. Luckily, you aren't helpless when it comes to roof leaks, and there are things that you can do to prevent them. The following is a list from our roofers of expert tips for preventing roof leaks:
- Make sure that your attic is properly ventilated – Not many people realize it, but heat from the attic can actually cause your roof to break down faster, which can cause leaks to form much more easily. If your attic is ventilated, but it still seems to be hot or humid up there, you should check out your intake vents to ensure that they aren’t clogged.
- Clean out your gutters and downspouts – Gutter cleaning is often overlooked, but it is a very important task for preventing issues with your roof. Water needs to be able to effectively flow off of your roof, and if your downspouts or gutters are clogged, water will get stuck on your roof, which can lead to leaks and mold growth.
- Thoroughly inspect anything that pops up out of the roof – Penetrations, like chimneys, skylights, plumbing vents or even satellites, are the most common sources for leaks, so make sure that you inspect them thoroughly to watch out for signs of damage.
